Universal Healthcare: The Slippery Slope
// 8.15.09 // Filed under: Freedom & Politics
I’d like to write a long, informative post defending my opposition to universal healthcare, but frankly, I don’t have the time. And there are plenty of people out there who say it better than I.
I will come out and say (in case you didn’t know) that I can’t stand the current President of our country. Can’t. Stand. His arrogant, joking attitude. His socialist agenda. Makes me sick.
And I will say that if “universal” (totalitarian?) healthcare is implemented, universal education, universal property management, and universal business regulation won’t be far behind.
I truly fear for our future.
Update 8/17/09: Yes, this post was written when I was upset and I absolutely tend to be dramatic. Here’s a calmer, more informative opinion piece on the healthcare issue. And a quote from it:
Related Posts:Once health care is a “free good” that government pays for, demand will soar and government costs will soar too. When the public finally reaches its taxing limit, something will have to give on the care and spending side. In a word, care will be rationed by politics.

Wow, how interesting. I didn’t like Obama before, but this is making me think twice. If this is true, I am starting to like the people advising Obama. I to believe that there needs to be population control. Also, we do not need to extend life expectancies, we need to improve the qualtiy of life. There is a big difference.
@TriciaFM You’re OK with the government telling you that you can’t have a child? I visited your blog and I’m sorry to see that you are suffering. What if the government decided you weren’t a productive enough member of society and rationed your healthcare?
Stopping by from SITS.
Definitely scary. I work for government. The employees are underpaid which means we attract people who sit and do nothing until retirement. If government takes over ANYTHING you’ll be mired in so much red tape, you won’t ever get anything done. Scary stuff.

I don’t think people understand the horrors of socialism.
And when you get it, it is truly scary.
Can we go back and read The Giver.
I want to have Glenn Beck’s love child – but I already have two kids. Would a third be OK with the Government? I can afford it, I promise.

I just wanted to say that I completely agree. It is so scary to think of where this man is trying to lead our country. Now is the time that we need to rise up as a nation and take a stand against what is wrong, and this is wrong!

As a homeschooler, I can understand the worry about a “slippery” slope. However, as someone who has been following this debate pretty closely, I have to say that I have a really hard time making the leap to the gov’t population control or euthenasia etc. But I also find it hard to watch Glen Beck who tends to contradict himself from day to day and just seems to want to rail about things.
http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/thu-august-13-2009/glenn-beck-s-operation
And as someone who has followed Obama pretty closely since his speech at the Dem convention in 2004, I don’t see any of these types of tendancies at all. Believe it or not, he is a centrist, not a flaming liberal (trust me, liberals are not 100% overjoyed with him either). He also is NOT trying to get gov’t to take over the country. He is reacting to companies and industries that have put profits over what is right and who are gaming the system for their own benefit.
(cont…)
It is wrong that there are millions of people in our country who do not have access to affordable health care. It is wrong that people have to worry about not being able to afford care even if they have health care (those who are uninsured or who have high deductibles or caps). And it is wrong that people can be denied coverage based on “pre-existing conditions”.
IMO, health insurance is one area that just does not lend itself well to a purely for-profit approach, because it leaves the sick, the poor and the disabled too vulnerable (because they cut into insurance companies’ profits). I found this interview really informative:
http://www.pbs.org/moyers/journal/07312009/profile.html
I know that many folks are not going to agree with me, but felt the need to commment just to throw out an alternative viewpoint out there. FWIW.
Stephanie´s last blog ..Here we go again…
@Stephanie I agree it’s unfortunate that lots of people don’t have access to affordable healthcare. But do you really think the government should be the judge and jury over this domain? I don’t want *them* deciding who and what should be covered. And the fact is that there is NO WAY to pay for EVERYTHING to be covered.
I also want to point out that you are citing The Daily Show as a journalistic source… Jon Stewart is a comedian, so I don’t really hold that in high regard (although I do think the Daily Show is hilarious!). As for your second link, Moyers is a liberal extremist. (Did you know he worked in the Lyndon Johnson adminstration and illegally searched FBI files to see if repub’s were gay – http://www.mofopolitics.com/2009/02/19/liberal-extremist-bill-moyers-investigated-lbj-aides-for-homosexuality/ ). Everyone has an agenda, so we all have to be careful to read between the lines when taking in our information.
LOL! It is all about perspective isn’t it Shannon? I would not exactly call Glen Beck “unbiased” or journalistic in any sense of the word.
I definitely was not citing The Daily Show as a “journalistic source” but rather because he is good at pointing out when people take contradictory stances.
Did you watch the Bill Moyers piece? Regardless of what you think about Moyers, what Wendell Potter shared about his time as a health care executive is extremely eye opening. (and Potter is hardly a left-wing ideologue, nor a “disgruntled employee”).
As far as gov’t being judge and jury, that is not what is being proposed. The gov’t won’t be providing the health care (like they do in Britain) and they won’t even be the sole provider of health insurance (like in Canada). They also will not be putting a “limit” on the type of care that is provided. They will be putting regulations on things that the health insurance industry can’t do (such as not cover pre-existing conditions) and they will ensure that there is a basic level of coverage that must be provided. If you want more coverage you will be able to buy it just as you can today. So in effect, it is setting a floor, not a ceiling in health coverage.
As far as not being able to afford it, we are already paying for it now in the form of higher health care costs and health care premiums are only going up. If you have great coverage through your employer, that is great, but if you don’t, private market insurance is woefully overpriced and limited (which can hit the self-employed extremely hard). My husband owns a small IT company and the rising health care premiums he pays for his employees are hitting him hard. I also find it intriguing that we can always find the money to fight unnecessary wars but can never find the money to take care of the American people (google Remote Area Medical).
Obviously neither one of us are going to convince the other one and I am sure that we could each do a great job at counter arguing each other.
I enjoy reading blogs to get other perspectives because I find that it can give me additional insight. Too often these types of debates are framed in a very black and white manner, when I really think there is more gray. Sorry if this response got too long again. I’ll save the rest of my thoughts for my blog.

We have Universal Healthcare in the UK, Yes it has some problems, but in general it works. Don’t believe all the adverts that are floating around the US nearly all the quotes are taken out of context.
Write two very catchy slogans that can be put on display on basic health-care something pertaining to the general health conditions prevalent in Oman.
(I had trouble getting on your site earlier in the week-thus the late response…)
Yep. I whole-heartedly agree. Universal healthcare scares me. Obama scares me. Yes, there needs to be some kind of reform, but for the love of all that is holy keep the government out of my personal business-read BANK ACCOUNT!, etc. I don’t presume to have any answers, but there’s got to be a better way than what is on the table now.

@TriciaFM You’re OK with the government telling you that you can’t have a child? I visited your blog and I’m sorry to see that you are suffering. What if the government decided you weren’t a productive enough member of society and rationed your healthcare?
1. I live in Canada. Which I am very thankful for not being an American.
2. I don’t remembering hear that the US was going to enforce a 1 child rule like China.
3. Why would you single me out as not being “productive enough member of society and rationed your healthcare”?
4. That can’t and doesn’t happen in Canada. The only place I have even heard of such things happens in America.
5. My Fiance wanted to know if I would ever move to the US for his work. I immediatly said “NO”. The reason being NO health care. I know no one would cover me anymore in your country, anyways before this that was already a reason no to live there, 1 of like 20.
6. I believe my Fiance pays enough taxes for both of us, as he in an executive and makes over $145,000 a year.
7. Americans are raised on so much PROPAGANDA and have such a corrupt government you can’t even think straight.
8. Obama is incompetent and just as corrupt as any other politician.
Thank God I live in Canada!
LOL!!! You raise brilliant topic, it is very important for all human being. I think that the President raised several million dollars for them.
Great post thank’s for sharing!

I think labeling the US goverment as being socialist or totalitarian is quite extreme. Not sure I’ve ever seen so much passion over an issue.

I’m one of those with a pre existing condition who had to wait for 8 years to get health insurance, but I completely agree with you that government run health care is a very scary thing. 80% of people in this country have health insurance and 10% are illegal and don’t deserve it. The remaining 10% do have access to health care…it’s called a free clinic. I’ve been to them and they are horrible. That is if you can even get an appointment to get in before you die. Health care reform…yes. Government-run socialist health care…NO WAY!
It’s hard for me not to have a mini panic attack about how our world is changing. Not a fan of public health care, and I don’t think it should be taking up our governments time at the moment, with all the more pressing things going on.
Nice posting .thanks
Universal health care is one of those things that sounds good on the surface but is really really bad.
Very nice information about Obama. This made me think twice about him. I think labelling the US government as being a socialist is extreme.
I hope this post would reach all people in the world
