Fresh Beat Band: Music, Action and Fun for Preschoolers

I swear I’m not being paid by Nickelodeon to promote The Fresh Beat Band. But I am going to post about them… again.
My first post about the new Nickelodeon band/show, Don’t Beat Down The Fresh Beat Band, is the top traffic generator to this site and could be the most-commented post I’ve ever had. Something’s going on here. What is it with this show? Well I’ve got the scoop from Teri Weiss, Senior Vice President of Production & Development for Nickelodeon Preschool Television.
Teri has been involved in the launch of mega-hits like Dora the Explorer and The Backyardigans, so I asked her if it’s typical for parents to be so outspoken about a show before it’s even aired. She explained how The Fresh Beat Band (FBB) is different than other Nick shows.
The FBB is Nick’s first live action show for preschoolers, meaning there are no puppets, no animation — just humans. “Our strategy was to launch them as a band first and get kids excited about the music,” said Teri. Nickelodeon started airing music videos by the band months ago, with no mention of a series. As the launch date got closer, the series was introduced.
“There was more conversation about this show because of the bigger window of time (used to promote the show),” Teri explained.
So why a live action show for preschoolers? “We learned a lot from Jack’s Big Music Show,” said Teri. When Nick execs attended live shows by bands like The Laurie Berkner Band and The Dirty Sock Funtime Band (both featured on Jack’s Big Music Show), they loved the energy and excitement coming from the kids.
“The energy of a live band – I wanted to bottle it and put it on TV. There was something special about it that we didn’t feel we had,” remembers Teri. She thought, “How can we create a TV show around a band that could capture that energy, tell a story, and send a positive message to kids through music?”

The curriculum focuses on three layers: music appreciation, self-expression through music, and comprehension of music terminology. Drummer Marina shows kids how they can make a drum kit out of anything. DJ/rapper Twist (who is a goofy, skilled physical comedy actor and my favorite character after having seen the first episode) gets his feet stuck in buckets and the band taps out a beat along with him. Musical terms and instruments are introduced and repeated to enhance understanding and retention.
Another reason there’s so much talk about this band is the “pop” feel to all the songs shown in the promos. Parents can find it grating and too sugary-sweet, but the pop feel was intentional, says Teri, because kids respond to it. However, during the show itself, kids will be exposed to different kinds of music – much more than the promotional videos are demonstrating – such as Hawaiian, opera, rock, and beat-boxing.
And while some parents may not be thrilled to have a Fresh Beat Band CD playing in their car over and over (although it’s WAY better than Yo Gabba Gabba or Wonder Pets), I think the show itself will surprise them. And their kids will love it. Check it out Monday at Noon ET on Nickelodeon.

My girls love this show!! I don’t usually let them watch much tv because I don’t want them just sitting and staring at the tv screen. We happen to see one of the promo videos while waiting at a doctor’s office and the girls immediately jumped up and started dancing with them. I went home and looked them up. We have recorded all the episodes and I love watching the girls get up and dance with the Fresh Beats. They get more exercise during a 20 minute show than most adults do during a work-out. I hope this is one show that sticks around for a LONG time!!!
Frankly, I can’t stand them, but my almost 3 year old loves the FBB. I do not like the show – as the acting is terrible, but the music is cute and I can’t wait to give him the cd for Christmas – he is going to go nuts!!!!

My three year old daughter and one year old son love the music of the Fresh Beat Band. They both get up and dance during the show. How can I get a cd i cant find it. Help.
I just don’t understand why the moms against this show hate it so much! They talk about the adults on the show acting like kids and how bad it is but I only have two words for them “THE WIGGLES”. 4 grown men acting like that! Oh, how dare they! But they are wildly popular and I bet the moms who are anti-FBB own at least one cd or dvd from the wiggles..Because who doesn’t that has a child under 5!?! I have a home based day care, and what I have to say to the parents out there that disapprove of FBB is this, Aren’t you the kids who were watching Ren and Stimpy? Right. No wonder you are too screwed up to notice a good quality learning show for kids.

my 27 months old loved this show sooo much!!! He have his own microphone to sing a long and dance along with them. and i wish i can find a dvd, so he can watch it without commercial. i love watching him dancing and singing. It disappointed when the show is not on..just like today .

My 18mth old son is addicted to this show! I had to DVR it and he watches it endlessly. He knows which song means its over so he comes and tells me. He dances and tries to sing along. I think this show is great. It’s cute and Twist is a crack up. The songs are catchy but not too childish and I love how they all have some kind of lesson like working together and being a good friend. Good job Nickoloden.

the fbb is the only show my 16 month old baby girl will watch.A dvd would be the best ever bc she crys when it ends .i love the show as well its so fun to watch her dance and the songs are fun and the cast is funny .there couldnt be a better show

My 3 year old son loves this show, and I do too. With all the other cartoons out there that are just ideally wrong for english speaking children, this one not only promotes working together and friendship, but has a tune that i dont mind hearing at all. The diversity is awesome and the music is groovin. At the current time there are no officially released CD or DVD from nickjr. Im sure like all of you we’ll be the first ones at ANY store selling this soon to be great releases.

All parents should bookmark this so when you want your kids to be instantly energetic, this is it. The commercial ads will be slightly annoying, but over time you really block em out as you would with any commercials on TV. they are all appropriate for children too, same as commercials on Nickelodian.

My son loves the show. He started watching it before he was a year old and he started dancing because of the show. OBVIOUSLY adults wont enjoy the show because of how the actors are acting but thats because it is meant for children. All that matters is that is a good show for kids. I find the songs very catchy and would also like to find a DVD or CD. Please email if someone knows where to find them.
there are no official release dates for the DVD or music soundtrack yet, but there is at amazon.com the first season available by download only. for the price they are selling, you’d best wait 2-3 more months till nick jr releases the DVD.
My 4 year old niece loves Fresh beat band.She watches it every morning. Twist is her favorite, she has a crush on him! My 2 year old nephew loves the show too. They both love to dance to it. And seriously people the fresh beat band is supposed to act that way, that’s why its called acting! If the kids love it then why should it matter how the Fresh beat band act?!

FBB Music can be downloaded via I-Tunes. Then of course burned onto a personal CD. Hope this helps

Both my 2 year old and my 10 month old LOVE this show!! And to be honest I don’t hate it myself! I jump around and dance to the show with my kids and sing the catchy songs!! It’s a great show, are there any Fresh Beat Band CD’s or movies?
I admit, I tolerate the show because my daughter loves it, I dont know why some parents dont like it. I thank heaven that my daughter dosent love Barney or something because I could not sit and watch that show the way I do the fresh beats. I love that my daughter is up dancing and laughing at the goofiness. It also shows kids not to freak out when something goes wrong, just thing about it and work together to fix it. Those are attributes most kids today need some teaching in. Most people need to learn the fine art of tolerance, especially when they are parents. If it makes your children happy, keeps them active, teaches something concerning the arts, and teaches them to be good people… OMG I get it now, that is all TERRIBLE things to be teaching a child, It has to be STOPPED lol.
I love the fresh beat band. It is a great show for the kids. It teaches a meaningful lesson each show. My niece, nephew, cousins, and my 11 month old son adores this show. My son has been a fresh beat fanactic since 6 months old. He stops everything when the show is on. He dances, sings, and jumps around if anyone sings a FB song. His first birthday party is personalized FB supplies. The party is two weeks from now and I am so excited for him. Thanks Fresh Beats.
