To Blog Or Not To Blog?
// 6.24.09 // Filed under: Tech & Blogging, Thriving
I almost quit blogging this past week.
Whenever I spend time traveling, on field trips, or working on projects around the house, I come back to my computer and wonder if this blogging gig is a good use of my time. It’s definitely not a big money-maker, so it’s more for my own personal satisfaction and quiet time. Which is fine, but there are so many other things I want to do that would also fill that need. Scrapbooking. Traveling. Photography. Gaming.
I’d love to have a blog that is a “business.” Something I can brand and promote and make money from. And I’ve tried (half-assed) to do this several times, but I’ve always felt too scattered. I have this “mommy blog,” but then I have a few other blogs about other topics and I can’t keep up with them all. Being the perfectionist that I am, it makes my brain explode and I just end up throwing my hands in the air and not focusing on anything.
I’ve been working on ProBlogger’s 31 Days to Build a Better Blog and it’s already helped me see that I need to make some changes. I don’t know what will become of this blog. I don’t know if I have it in me to turn this blog into a place where I share resources for homeschooling parents and discuss how blogging and the internet can help them find community, support and information.
And… haven’t you read this exact same post on this blog several times before… ?
So I thought I might just close up shop. Then I thought I’d just stick with one blog. Then I thought maybe I’d try to re-brand. Then my brain exploded and I threw my hands up in the air.
Decisiveness is not my strong suit.

I personally go so involved in blogging that other hobbies, like reading, fell by the wayside. So I decided to:
Network less
Twitter less
Combine 3 blogs into 1
Has helped balance everything tremendously!!
I go back and forth on this one all the time. One minute I have a ton of blog projects in mind, the other minute I just want to erase them all.
Of course, one is a profitable business blog I hold with a partner and she probably wouldn’t be thrilled with me if I deleted that one, so I guess at least that one will stay
I just wanted to stop by and say thank you for visiting me on my special SITS day!
I wrote a post not long ago about “why am I blogging”. But, I do truly enjoy it….just wish there were more hours in my day!
I go through this as well—probably weekly at this point! I have so many unfinished projects and books around the house that I often wonder why I am still perched in front of this computer!

You sound a lot like me: How do I find the time and energy to homeschool well and do all things I want to do, especially in the blogosphere?? It’s tough to balance it all and often I think if I didn’t care about certain things, like writing, life would be so much easier. But there is no way I’m cutting writing from my life, or homeschooling! So that leaves cleaning, cooking, grocery shopping, all the non-essentials. ha.

I have had days like that too. But I am seeing more profits come in all the time. I am glad for one that you do such a good job with this blog. but I know what you mean about being outside in that fresh air and traveling.

I thought about it, too, this week (for the first time), just because I felt pressured to post. But then, I came up with one of my favorite posts ever, so there you have it; I’m staying.

Don’t quit. The surest way to fail at something is to STOP. Keep going. Keep learning. Keep at it. The effort is its own reward.
I feel you! I have thought those same thoughts. I also found that I let my real life fall by the way side as I got more and more involved in blogging. It is so hard to find a good balance. And, no I haven’t found the answer.
PS–I see that we’re both going to SITScation! See you there!
I just discovered you today on SITS. Looks to me like you have so much to offer. I have only been doing this since March. What I like the most is of course meeting other women bloggers, but also I find that I now look for ways to be braver, to have interesting experiences, to find things to photograph, so I can post about them. I look forward to reading more of your posts.

wait. did I write this post?
Cant wait to chat in person….
Your struggle is exactly why I hesitate to get into blogging. Too much time already goes to Facebook, Shutterfly, photos, keeping track of my kids, on and on…. Best of luck with deciding what to do and not having to constantly ask yourself the question. Know though that many of us love to read what you have to say!
You know? I almost tried ProBlogger’s 31 days challenge, but I didn’t. I think that’ll check it out. What kind of changes did you end up making because of it?

if you don’t love it, it’s not worth it. i love the friendships i’ve made and i love just writing posts, whether anyone’s reading or not.

You are funny. I have had all those same thoughts. Often.
Thanks for plugging my blog, by the way. And you can’t quit blogging. I won’t let you.
I love ProBlogger, but I can tell you that you don’t have to share homeschool tips with me for me to love your blog. The main thing other homeschool moms want in blogs they frequent is connection with someone else who’s as crazy as they are.

I started blogging last year as a way to deal with seasonal depression. Living in Minnesota the winters are unbearabley long!! Anyway it has turned into a wonderful outlet for me. I have met so many new friends and now I have a voice in the world. I probably will never stop blogging.
I think as long as you provide balance/limits for yourself, blogging can be a great way to keep connected, scrapbook, voice your opinions etc…all in one place. IT could actually save you time;)

Oh, BELIEVE me! I’ve thought about unplugging this glowing tube and selling it off at times. It’s now 1:30 a.m. and I’ve finished a short post on one of my (two) blogs, checked e-mail, and now I’m perusing other folks’ blogs. I’m supposed to be wrapping up a book – only two chapters to go but I find myself distracted by the blogging diversion.
Still, it’s fun sometimes, isn’t it?

I blog because I like it but I have cut way back on the amount of time I spend. I am on Entrecard and used to try to drop 100 cards a day for both my blogs. It just seemed like such a waste of time to me so now I just focus on visiting fewer blogs through my blogrolls, SITS (just joined recently) and the ones I follow and commenting along the way. I still use Entrecard too but not nearly as much.
It seems like you just need to take off some pressure and don’t push yourself so much concerning blogging (which is hard for a perfectionist, I know). Just make it 3rd or 4th priority and do it because you enjoy it, not to make money.
Finding that balance between real life and being online is difficult. I agree with osc shop–wish there were more hours in the day.
