Fun With 40s

// 11.26.08 // Filed under: Thriving

In about four months I will be 40 years old. Nothing about that bothers me — I’m all about how I look and feel and not the number of candles on my cake.

But I do like to play little games with myself for motivation, and this is a “milestone” birthday. So I came up with four goals I will be working toward over the next four months:

  1. Lose 40 pounds.
  2. Complete 40 scrapbook pages.
  3. Workout 40 times.
  4. Run for 40 minutes non-stop.

#2 is simple. I’m going to a weekend scrapbooking crop in January and I could probably finish 40 pages that weekend alone. But I’m going to try to include some digital layouts, too, because I’m just getting into digi-scrapping and really loving it.

#4 is do-able. I’m training to run a half marathon in May and I have friends to train with. I’m pretty confident I can accomplish this goal.

#3 is challenging. That means an average of 2.5 workouts per week. I’ve been averaging one per week. Gotta step it up.

#1 feels like climbing Mt. Everest. I love food. I’ve wanted to lose this weight for about 2 years and so far I haven’t found the discipline. All I can do is try. Harder.

  1. As one who made it past her 40th birthday almost two years ago, I can relate! I joined a marathon/walking group, lost weight, started a business and basically went hog wild being the best 40 I could be! It was fun. I didn’t keep up some of the marathon walking like I should ahve, unfortunately, due to all the business things I got involved in, but now I am ready to re-energize myself and make 42 goals for the new year. :-)

  3. Hey, my sister did something similar. She decided to lose 40lbs a year ago when she turned 40. So far she is just about there, she had a motivation problem when she started. The key, so she says, is finding food that is healthy and that you enjoy. She took to growing veggies in her backyard and only eats fresh… seemed to work.

    Good luck!

    You have a good attitude about turning 40 and a wonderful idea about using it for motivation.

    You can do anything you set your mind too. I’m 39 and in the best shape of my life. 6 months ago i started a diet and have lost 45 pounds since. I run on the treadmill at the gym for 40 minutes 6 days a week and eat right. Its not really that difficult. Good Luck!

    I turned 40 a year ago, and so far, I’m having the best time of my life. I’ve got a long way to go, but I’m fitter and healthier than I’ve been in years, and happier too. I made an amazing discovery – the key to losing weight is eating less and exercising more. Who would have thought? Good luck with your goals and have fun!
