Big Isn’t Always About Size

// 6.13.08 // Filed under: My Son

Mariners v Braves. Game tied 7-7 in the fifth inning. Top of the sixth, Mariners walked, then got a nice hit to right center field. A few stolen bases and the score was 9-7. Bottom of the sixth and the Mariner’s pitcher shut the Braves down.

No, not a major league baseball game. It was our local AA Little League World Series. And my son was on the winning team.

L is second from the right, bottom row.

As they were giving out trophies, the coach had a little intro for each boy. When it was L’s turn, Coach said, “This guy, smallest guy on the team, doesn’t say much, but he’s a solid, all-star second baseman.” I want to remember that. I doubt the coach put a ton of time into this little intro, but it says a lot to me. You see, L is smaller than a lot of 7 year olds (and he’s 9 1/2). What I know is that he might not be a big, boisterous kid, but he’s big where it counts: his heart, his dedication to the team, and his focus.

Congrats, my man.

    Great post, Shannon! So excited to hear of L’s victory. What a thrill. I’ve never been a sports fan of any kind, but watching Finn work for success on his LL team has got to be one of my favorite things. While Finn’s not small for his age (as you well know), I understand just what you’re saying here. I’m always prouder of Finn’s attitude, focus, and hard work at his ball games than I am of his physical strength and talent. L should be super proud and so should you!

    My 7 yr. old is smaller than almost all kids his age. He looks more like a 5 yr. old but just like your son he has a lot of heart. Congrats to your boy.

    Nothing beats to see your children proud, I never forget the first time daughter proudly told me she to the toilet alone, 2 years. I can see that face for the rest of my life, she was so proud.
