Who Wants to Life Swap With Me?

I think it would be cool if I could “life swap” with someone for a week or two.
Like my husband’s cousin who is single and has a cool job in NYC. She goes to work, then has thousands of options for dinner, evenings and weekends. And no one to answer to but herself.
Or my sister who has a full-time job she enjoys, gets to go on business trips with lots of perks, and has her child in day care five days a week.
Or my sister-in-law whose three children are in school all day. She gets to go to the gym every morning.
Anyone want to swap with me? I have two homeschooled children, I spend a large part of my life organizing activities for them and taxi-ing them around, I have no real job to speak of and hardly any quality time with my husband. I know you’re excited to swap with me. Take a number, OK?
I do, of course, realize that “the grass is always greener.” I’m sure any of the above-mentioned women would give me an earful of the things they don’t like about their lives. And I do have things to be happy and thankful for: a wonderful man who supports me and my needs, two amazing children who are smart and healthy, friends, hobbies and a decent amount of free time.
But if there was any way I could hop on a plane and spend a week alone right now, I’d be off in a heartbeat.

I really do think that you’re right in what you said about the grass always being greener. I was just telling a Moms ministry group at church yesterday that there are so many people (especially online) that I just feel so inferior when I think of them. But, then I have had many times when people that I know (even in “real life”) make comments about wishing they were as organized and put together as me. I think, “I’m sorry — do we know each other?” LOL

It’s true: The grass is always greener.
But as a single woman with a job in NYC where I’m tied to a cubicle 8 hours a day, I gotta say you’re definitely right on one thing: When I get home, I have no one to answer to. If I want to eat peas and a half pint of blueberries for dinner–standing up, without cutlery–I can.(Did this last week). And I can watch a sappy lame movie like Flicka, with no one to tuck in to bed or tell me I’m wasting my time. Thank you for reminding me how awesome that part of my life is, and how great it is that I have two weeks of pure solitude coming up, no matter where I go.
At the same time, I read your blog and think how cool it would be to live away from the hustle and bustle of the city with flexible work hours, an entrepreneurial spirit, and the ability to work towards your goals in the company of a loving family. And a fireplace and a Playstation 2. If you were to get a dog, I would potentially talk trade.

It would not do you any good to trade with me, I only have one son but add in a pet sitting business and 2 dogs,7 cats of our own! Yikes… what gate do I board again!
yes, swapping would be fun. A taste of another life for just a short time would make me appreciate my own even more.

There are days that I would trade with a mom who had more flexible hours or who worked part time. Then I get into my work and remember why I love teaching, and decide I wouldn’t trade with anyone in the world.

Swapping, eh? I think women in general could benefit from something like “wife swap” only kids and husbands wouldn’t be required. Sometimes being in another pair of shoes (well, not your *own* other pair of shoes) is enough to make you realize exactly what we’ve taken for granted in our own lives. Or at least it lets us see that what we thougth was sucking the very last breathe from us is not quite is actually not quite what it seems to be.
