March: In Like a Lion

March is coming in like a lion. Not so much weather wise, but work wise, health wise, family wise.

I’ve had three new blog clients in the past two weeks. I blame thank Mrs. Fussypants and her tireless promotion of Blissfully Domestic, where I contribute articles as the “Web Guru.” I love web design. But I hate it. Nothing fires me up as much as creating a gorgeous design. Nothing keeps me motivated and awake at night like a CSS coding frenzy. But then there’s that ONE EFFING THING that just won’t work. Or the site looks amazingly perfect in Firefox, but whack in IE. Or the client asks for “one small change” that seems simple, but is actually a huge time-sucker. But I love it, so I continue to walk the line between formally committing to it as a career and totally banishing it from my resume.

On top of this flurry of work, I’ve been sick. I’m hardly ever sick, but this is the third time in as many months that I’ve had a stomach flu. No one else in my family gets it — just me. I’m starting to wonder if it’s something else… but I’m squashing my inner hypochondriac for now.

I’ve been having a bit of blogger’s block lately. It seems that each time something amusing or challenging happens in my family, I decide against blogging it. Several things have been happening with my son lately, but somehow it’s just not funny or cute to blog about a tween’s growing pains the way it is when your child is 2 or 3. My boy is growing up and I see myself in him more and more each day. I used to think, “Oh no, he’s just like me!” But lately I’ve come to see that he’s got as many of my wonderful qualities as he does the shitty ones. He makes me proud every day.

And just because I haven’t blogged much about politics lately… When the democratic candidates unabashedly proclaim their intent to “tax & spend” and extend the government’s reach over more of our private lives and personal freedoms, I just have to wonder how we’ve come so far from our founding fathers’ vision for this country. It makes me sad.

I’m just sayin’.

Oh no! Do they get less bloggable as they get older? I better start working on some more right now so I’ve got blog fodder once my kid gets older.

Your designs always look fantastic - even if it is a pain to get to that point.

They do get less bloggable as they get older, I think. My son is 12, in junior high and I feel like I have to be more careful what I print.

I’m using my real name to comment, since I realized there is another “Carrie” out there who also responds to your blog every once in a while…..
First, I just want to say that you are an incredibly talented web designer. I understand your frustration, but - my two cents - it would be a shame if you gave it up. [Billing people HANDSOMELY for your time making those "minor changes" might help ease that frustration! ;-)] Second, I read somewhere that most cases (about 90%) of “stomach flu” are actually minor bouts of food poisoning. It might help to keep track of things you are eating that the rest of your family isn’t. And, third, please keep your political blogs coming! The more people enlightened the better! The “tax, spend, and regulate” rhetoric is actually making me nauseous - a combination of feeling angry, sad, and helpless. Do these politicians really not get it??

I’m not sure that they get less bloggable, but it feels a little more like an invasion of their privacy to blog about their lives now - -and I’m totally ok with that! ;-)

I’m sorry I haven’t visited in a while. I’m happy to hear you’re busy with clients though. I checked out your designs. Very cool! Four out of five of us had that nasty stomach thing. Only the baby was spared. I hope you feel better.
