Loved them all (found you through Blissfully Domestic). The time-out thing has me thinking very hard about my challenging child which is probably a very good thing. The first one was a no brainer for me–it is nice to read something other than Obama on a blog–very rare.

As a discipline alternative, you could try time-in, which can be a bit like time-out but the child is nearby, e.g. sitting down near you (although not necessarily engaged with you) until calm and able to talk things through. If sitting still doesn’t do it for your children, you could try to opposite, e.g. jumping jacks to help vent that pent-up energy/emotion and/or help them get unstuck in their thoughts or feelings. You can also help them practice resolving conflicts. If your child has done something hurtful to you (or a sibling), he could be asked to choose a way to straighten things out, e.g. apologize, draw a picture for the victim, help with a chore to make up for time wasted due to uncooperative behavior.

  6. For older kids I usually have them pick a chore from the chore box. (Little slips of paper with various household duties that can be done in a few minutes.)

So either they’ll grow up to despise housework… or… hmm.

Anyway, it is more productive and at least they get to move. I think cleaning is therapeutic anyway. And, it builds self esteem.

That article is a little too “it’s all mommy’s fault, your kids wouldn’t misbehave if you did everything perfect” for me.

I think of time-outs more as an opportunity for me to get a breather and think about the cause behind the symptoms. They’re a break. We all need ‘em sometimes. But I agree with the author that used ineffectively, they’ll be…well, ineffective.

Thank you for saying that. I was thinking the same thing, but I couldn’t think of a way to say it that didn’t come off snarky.
