Thanks To Miley Cyrus, I Relived My Childhood

Back in November, PHAT Daddy and I saw Van Halen in concert. They were my favorite band as a teenager and it was amazing seeing David Lee Roth back with the band again. But that concert was nothing like my experience this past Saturday when my son and I went to the “Hannah Montana / Miley Cyrus Best of Both Worlds Concert featuring the Jonas Brothers.” (You have to say it like that - it’s, like, the law or something.)

1-5-07mcThe music? Van Halen clearly blows Miley Cyrus away. The performance? I’d call it even. Maybe tipped a bit in Cyrus’s favor, but both shows were extremely well-done. But the atmosphere? The emotion? The sheer energy? Cyrus wins, hands down.

At the Van Halen show, we were surrounded by mostly 30- and 40-somethings. I felt like an “older” person enjoying a band that I loved long ago. At the “Hannah Montana / Miley Cyrus Best of Both Worlds Concert featuring the Jonas Brothers” I had so many emotions coursing through me. So many teenage memories came flooding back.

First, there were the two girls sitting next to us. They both had “I love Nick Jonas” written on their hands. They were dressed as if this was an evening at a hot NYC night club. When the Jonas brothers sang, they screamed along with every word. Then - and this is what really got me - when there was a lull in the music, they’d scream “MARRY ME NICK!” Ah, I remember those days. The days when you were so infatuated with a celebrity that you actually thought they MIGHT JUST hear your plea and call you backstage.

I was taken back to the days of Rick Springfield. When I looked at him through binoculars at a concert (they didn’t have the big screens back then) and I SWORE he looked RIGHT AT ME!!!!! The days when I dressed like Madonna. The days when I wore a fedora ALL THE TIME to show my love for John Taylor of Duran Duran. The days when I memorized everything I could possibly find about Cheap Trick’s singer Robin Zander. And the days when I fantasized about what I might do to David Lee Roth, were he ever to give me the opportunity.

1-5-07jbThe concert was a ton of fun. I enjoy Hannah Montana and I like her Miley Cyrus side even more. When she came out as Miley, she rocked hard and you could see her passion. She seems like a sweet girl and she gave her shout-outs to her causes and her family. But I thoroughly enjoyed watching the audience. Ranging from little kids to teenagers, I could see the sparkle in their eyes and I remembered having that same sparkle.

And the best part? When my son said to me, “This is the best thing I’ve ever done in my life!”

When I took my girls in November, it was the same way. They had so much fun and I think I had more fun that there than I did at my last “grown up” concert!

Aaaaahhhhhh…..that picture of your son- with that look of total enjoyment forced me to comment. What a great post. I have four children (the oldest of which is 11 and would have LOVED to have gone to see Hannah/Miley). What a great mom you are, and I loved the commentary regarding Van Halen :)

I never went to concerts as a kid or teen. My first one was when I was 22/23. But my daughter would LOVE to go to a Hannah Montana concert, and I so hope one of these days I can make that happen :)

You are an absolute saint for weathering that concert I would like to think that I could do it for my kids and I probably will but I am not so sure I could do it with your enthusiasm!

I didn’t get to go to the concert myself unfortunately (I think), but TheWife and daughter had an absolute blast. Though to be honest, I didn’t hear a word about the Jonas brothers until AFTER the concert, when my daughter saw them leaving the arena and “they waved to me, daddy”

The tickets for that concert cost more than I think all the tickets I have ever bought to a concert for myself, but the she happiness it brought was well worth it.

Glad to see you and yours had an equally great time.

I can’t wait until our kids are old enough to go to concerts like this. So far I only get to go to things like a Wiggles concert, which is pretty good to be honest, but at least if it is the latest pop sensation I can pretend it is someone else and I am still vaguely cool.

That and hopefully the bar will be open, rather than turned into a pram parking lot!

Oh…. I remember those Rick Springfield days! I was so smitten!! I remember standing in about the 10th row back at his concert and thinking how he was looking only at me. Those were the days!

My 6 year old “K” just adores her Miley/ Hannah and I catch myself belting out a few of the tunes!! It sticks in my head like the “green acres” song or the “honeycomb” cereal commercial!!!!!
It’s nice to see families that really enjoy each other.
Great move homeschooling! We are looking into it ourselves.

I was randomly blog-jogging when I saw this entry and had to comment. Rick Springfield was the first concert I attended without parental supervision. LOL! I was also a HUGE Van Halen fan - saw them in concert twice. Once with David Lee and once with Sammy. And what do I get? A 6 year old who HATES music. LOL At least my 16 month old is showing some promise. He loves all my old 80s music.
