It’s Bizarre How Much I’m Looking Forward to This Surgery
Filed Under: Thriving
Wednesday morning I go under the knife. I’m getting a tubal ligation and a repair of an umbilical hernia. And I’m SO looking forward to it.
The tubal is pretty self-explanatory: no more babies for me. And no more birth control pills. People have had various reactions of surprise when I’ve mentioned my plan. “Are you sure you want to do that?” Absolutely. I’m 38 and happily married with a son and a daughter. There’s no way I am interested in having any more children. “Why don’t you have your husband take care of that?” Well, frankly, that’s just none of anyone’s business. “Are you nervous about having surgery?” Nope. I’m kinda surprised about this myself, but I have absolutely no nervousness. I’ve had general anesthesia before. I’ve even had a similar surgery before.
Not only do I have no apprehension, I’m actually psyched about the surgery. After the tubal, a second surgeon comes in to take care of my umbilical hernia. When I was pregnant with my second child, my belly button popped WAY out and never went back to normal. It’s ugly and I thought I was stuck with it — an unfortunate result of being pregnant and stretched. Then my doctor told me it was actually a hernia and could easily be repaired. Wahoo!
No more birth control concerns. A nice “inny” belly button again. Tylenol with codeine. And – perhaps the most attractive part of all this? - at least two days of lying in bed while my family takes care of me.

PHAT = Parenting, Homeschooling And Technology. That about sums up my life at the moment.

Ahhh, see if you can stretch it to 3 days. ;o) I hope everything goes well and you’re proudly showing off in a bikini this summer!!! Take care, Cous!!!

Oh, I agree. Three days, minimum! Congrats on knowing what you want and going for it — I kind of envy the peace of mind you’re going to have every month now.

Oh man, I think I have a huge umbilical hernia. I heard insurance usually doesn’t pay for it to be fixed, unless it’s causing real issues, though.
But it’s so incredibly ugly. And it doesn’t make wearing pants easier.

I think that you’ve made the right decision. I think that it’s good to have kids in your 20’s into your mid 30’s, you know because of health concerns, fertility, and all that jazz. I hope that you’re recovering well!

Good luck with the surgery! I hope you get to really enjoy the days of lying in bed being pampered.

Tylenol with Codeine? No, no, no. You have to insist on Vicidon at the least. And after you’ve taken that, see if you can get bumped up to Percodan! Now that will totally make it worthwhile! Yay drugs!

I’ll be thinking about you! I had a tubal immediately after my last c-section, because three kids is enough for us. It really is a relief not to have to worry about birth control any more. Enjoy the pampering, I hope the pain isn’t too bad for you and that you get some good drugs

Thanks everyone! Everything went fine and I’m doing great.
Stefanie - ha! I guess it’s been awhile since I’ve needed pain meds. Yes, they gave me percoset in the hospital - very nice!!! Then a prescription for vicodin, which has been serving me quite well the past couple days.

I had a tubal immediately after #4, and it was AWESOME. Rest up!
