Lollipop: How Times Have Changed

Two Stories About LollipopMy husband has an affinity for saving things, and he recently came across some old books from his childhood. One of the books – Two Stories About Lollipop – demonstrated just how much times have changed since the early 1970’s.

In this book, some boys find a stray dog that becomes theirs after no one claims it. One day, the boys have to go to the doctor and the book depicts the four boys piling into a Brady Bunch-style station wagon, Moms in the front seat and boys hanging out the back, smiling and waving to their dog. Car seats? Nope.

After their appointment, the boys leave the doctor’s office with lollipops. My son even picked up on that one, asking why they got lollipops instead of stickers. As a child, I always got lollipops after my doctor’s appointments. Maybe that’s why I have such a love of sugar. Damn that pediatrician!

In case you’re curious about the plot, the dog gets into the treats while they boys are having dinner and therefore gets his name, “Lollipop.”

We got lollipops, but they were sugar free and tasted nasty.

I bet those stickers don’t taste very good either.

Yeah, my son gets sugar free lollipops. He seems to actually like them though. (ugh!)

I can remember traveling in the big station wagon and lounging in the “back-back” – no seat belts, no restraints… and no doubt we sucked on lollipops that the doctor and even the dentist gave us. But then I am talking about the ’60s here…

Car seats? Don’t even get me started. I never had to have a car seat as a child growing up in the 70’s and 80’s. I ended up just fine. Nowadays, we “need” the government telling us that we are required by law to use a car seat. Car seats with those cursed center buckle assemblies which insist on always being in the wrong direction once you place your child on the car seat, which then requires you to reach under your child to make sure the assembly is facing the proper direction so you can buckle it (which rips up your fingers in the process).

I just read recently that there are several schools in the country who banned the playing of “tag” during recess. That’s right. No tag. These people are going to turn our children into a bunch of spineless wimps. What a shame.

I played tag at school while growing up. I turned out ok. :)

Nice blog you have. I added you to my blogroll. Hope you don’t mind.

    Best –
    Braden

Not-fer-nothin’ but if anyone should get some kind of a treat after going to the doctor and feeling demoralized, it should be us woman for Pete’s sake!

    Just sayin’

I had this book when I was little. Well to be honest it’s probably still in a box at my Mom’s house it was one of my favourite books.
