Help the Musically Challenged, or Yes, I Am That Pathetic

// 11.7.06 // Filed under: Thriving

iPodSee this nice little iPod? It’s lonely. It’s owner has had it for nearly a month, has only downloaded two songs, and hasn’t even stuck the headphones in her ears once. (In fact, she’s not even sure they are still referred to as “headphones.”)

The owner, of course, is me. For the past ten years my interest in music has been slowly waning. I don’t listen to the radio. I don’t care much for concerts where I come home with ringing ears and bruised toes or ribs from people bumping into me. I crave silence. I will bop along with the kids’ music, but I’m not lovin it so much that I’d download the High School Musical soundtrack to listen to at the gym. No, I’m ready for something new. And I know absolutely nothing about current adult music.

So, blog friends, help my iPod out. What are you listening to that really lights your fire? I’m looking for something that will keep me pumped during my workout. (And, oh, did I mention that my kids are being angels at the health club day care lately? PHAT Daddy & I have been going to the gym nearly every morning!) I’ll give you a little background: I loved disco, Rick Springfield, Duran Duran, Cheap Trick, Van Halen, Madonna, Bon Jovi, Guns & Roses, and Soul Asylum. That should get you thinking.

What are your suggestions?

    Delurking reader here…

There are SO many great songs to amp up your workouts! I cannot workout without my MP3 player and I fantacize about having an Ipod one day! Here’s my favorites, some of which are artists you list:

Justin Timberlake’s Sexy Back (great beat!)
Black Eyed Pea’s, Pump It (again great beat)
Bon Jovi’s “Everyday” (my current FAV on the treadmill)
Guns & Roses, Sweet Child of Mine (great running song)
    Eminem, Lose Yourself
Laura Branigan, Gloria (A blast from the past)
Pointer Sisters, Jump for my Love (an old fav)
    Christina Aguilera, Ain’t No Other
Jett, Are you Gonna Be My Girl

2366 tracks for your browsing and inspiration.

Since you like that 80’s hair metal vibe I’ll point you to Butch Walker as something to check out.

Anything from John Mayer… “You Body is a Wonderland” is very motivating to workout to! Black Eyed Peas, great too!

Two words. Audio books. I put off getting an ipod because I don’t really listen to my cds too much. Then I discovered that you can store lots of audio books on a ipod and play them in the car. I started with books for the boys, branched out into books for me. (check out http://www.audible.com) Then I graduated to podcasts…there are lots of great ones out there. I can now download my favorite NPR shows and listen to them when I get a chance. I started actually using my ipod and it has leaked over to using it for music…I just downloaded Sting’s new album (for the lute…go figure but it is awesome).

I am now addicted to my ipod…I have an ipod player in my bedroom and we just got one to run it through the stereo speakers in our family room…

    Good luck!

Audio Books are the greatest! Audible is good but also check out your public library (and those around you)too; you can often download books right from their website.

For music, if you google “top songs of the 80s”, you’ll get a huge list to choose from.

Get ITrip — that’s the thing that allows you to listen to whatever’s on your Ipod through your car radio. You tune your car radio to a certain station, then hook it to your Ipod…that’s all there is to it. And it doesn’t cost very much either.

Barlow Girl is a sister band that sings Christian rock. They are great. Third Day is another great christian band. Reliant K has a sound very similar to Green Day. Jennifer Knapp is a great singer along with Nicole Nordeman.

BUT Bill O’Reilly uninteruppted by commercials would be my podcast choice!!

Personally, I absolutely love Justin Timberlake when I’m at the gym.

If you want music more based in rock, you definitely should check out Pete Yorn. Music for the Morning After is perfect for working out.

Other personal choices: Dave Matthews Band, The Fray, The Killers …and I’ll second the John Mayer suggestion. :)

    Bonnie Tyler
    Holding Out For a Hero

There is nothing better to work out to in the world.

Unless it’s Head Over Heels by the Go-Gos.

Check out http://www.pandora.com. It will take the bands you like, and try to find more music for you, based on your feedback. I’ve got one I started based on Def Leppard, Queen, Sweet, and Yes. I have a LOT of music, but even so Pandora has found me bands that I’ve never heard of, and that are GREAT. They even oh-so-helpfully provide an iTunes purchasing link right there on the page.

If my kids never get braces, they can blame it on the fact that their parents spent the orthodontics money at iTunes …

The local heavy metal station in Saint Louis has taught me that Judas Priest and Scorpions are still worth listening to. Quiet Riot, on the other hand, makes me want to go back in time and punch my past self and apologize to my parents.

On the disco side, what about Paula Abdul, “Straight up”?

  11. Nora says:

I second Stephanie’s audiobook suggestion — I get lectures on tape for the gym, and my workout just zooms by. Also, This American Life is avaiable for free via podcasts.

As for high energy rock, I love Arcade Fire’s album Funeral — it’s got an epic feel to it that’s great for working out.
