As Long As She Sleeps, I’m OK With It

SnuggleMy daughter has decided that the floor is a better place to sleep than her bed.

Since she’s moved from a crib to a bed, we’ve had some issues with bedtime. At first, she wanted me to lay down next to her until she fell asleep. I cuddled a little, then left the room. She cried, but after a while she realized this was the way it worked and she simply went to sleep. Oh, and we had a little help from Molly Mathews.

Recently, she figured out that she could get out of bed. Hey, this isn’t a crib! I can get out! The first time she did this in the middle of the night, she started pulling on her doorknob so the door made a loud banging sound. PHAT Daddy & I leapt out of bed like we were shot out of a cannon. Being woken from a sound sleep by a loudly banging door scares the shit out of you.

The new bedtime routine became: read books, cuddle, give her a kiss, close the door, she gets out of bed, cries, pulls on the doorknob, bangs on the door, and falls asleep on the floor next to the door. I would go in after 30 minutes or so and put her in bed. There were also nightly episodes of waking at 3:30 am to bang some more on the door. I’d go in once to check on her and put her in bed and when she got out again I’d let her cry. Sometimes she’d stop crying suddenly. And, oh, the crazy things that go through my mind. Maybe that last thud wasn’t her banging on the door, but her falling and her head hitting the toybox and that’s why the crying stopped so suddenly. Because she’s unconscious. But she was always fine and after a week or so of this, the night wakings stopped.

Then a few nights ago, she asked to go to sleep on the floor. She took her blankets and her stuffed animals and said “You bring my pillow on green floor?” (Her carpet is light green.) I figure she’s going to end up there anyway, so she might as well be comfortable. We give it a try. She went right to sleep. Huh.

I’ve been trying to convince her that her bed is more comfortable and she should just stay in bed (like Molly Mathews does!), but maybe it’s not more comfortable. I wouldn’t let her sleep all night on the floor, but if she prefers to fall asleep that way for now, I’m OK with that.

We went through that with my oldest – although a little different. She wouldn’t go to sleep in her bed, around 22 months, so she slept in a sleeping bag on the floor for a few weeks. Then we converted her crib to a toddler bed, and she slept there, or on the floor. Eventually she slept in her bed. I figure, as long as she is sleeping, it doesn’t matter!

Hey, whatever gets them to sleep through the night in their own rooms is fine with me!

Girlfriend did that too! I think the idea of the freedom would get her wandering around her room with her blanket, and she would just fall asleep whereever she was. We did the transition in summer, so I didn’t worry about her getting a chill. I did end up unzipping a large sleeping bag and putting it on her floor for a few weeks at bedtime, and she would tell me “Time to camp” for weeks when I did it. I would find her in the morning, with stuffed animals pulled from teh baskets and lining all the edges of the sleeping bag, like she quietly played herself to sleep.

we just put our two year old into his own bed and he gets in with us sometime during the night. he doesnt like sleeping by himself. its semi-annoying. mommy doesnt wake up happy being stuffed into a bed with two other men. :(
