Your Child’s Room Through the Years

// 10.26.06 // Filed under: My Daughter, My Son, Parenting

I was cleaning the other day and I stopped to lean in the doorway of my daughter’s pretty little toddler room, wondering what the room might look like in 5 or 10 years. Different color paint? Posters and pre-teen paraphernalia on the walls? Different furniture? I pictured my room as a teenager and realized that I had no idea what my room looked like when I was a younger child.

It was then I decided to create a record of my kids’ rooms through the years. I took these photos (plus a few more) to post here and to create a scrapbook layout whenever their rooms change.

L’s room, 2006:

Luke's room

C’s room, 2006:

Leia's room

I hope this idea inspires some of you to record the more mundane features of your child’s growth. They may not seem so mundane to your children in 30 years!

What a great idea! I was actually trying the other day to think back on my rooms through the years and what mattered the most to me as a kid. We’re trying to decide how we can make Baby A’s room more cool for a two-year-old.

But, I didn’t make the–duh!–connection between wondering about mine and documenting hers. I’ll be getting out the camera tomorrow.

What a fantastic idea! I read your blog all the time, and plan on homeschooling one day. I can’t tell you how much of a great resource I think your blog is/will be!

This idea takes the cake, though. I think back to my own childhood, and it’s all of the minor, silly little details that stick out in my head that I cherish the most. Why didn’t I think of this?

  4. I love this idea.

Except I’ll have to clean my girls’ room first. A photo of it in its present condition would prompt a visit from Child Services.

    I like this idea, too!

I’m sure that Baby Boy’s room will change through the years…but when hubby and I were decorating he started to hang a lot of his pennants and sports posters on the wall…so the room is kinda baby and kinda sports nut. If he stays a sports nut we may not have to redecorate for a while! :)

What a great idea! Thanks. It is also a great way to help your memory if you move and want to recreate some of the old room.

  7. LOVE this idea! Although I had hopes that the girls would live in this room, as is, forever! As it is right now, I can’t get ‘em out of my bed. Oh well, I still love their room!
