Thriving? Not So Much.

I just came across this neat web site called “The World’s Healthiest Foods.” They have a list of (you guessed it) the world’s healthiest foods and lots of articles and recipes to get you eating those foods. There is also a little quiz you can take called the Food Advisor, which analyzes your nutritional status. Here’s an excerpt from my results:
According to the Food Advisor you are getting approximately 19% of your total day’s calories from the World’s Healthiest Foods. To keep your nutrient intake in a generally safe zone we recommend that this percentage be at least 75%. Approximately 81% of your total day’s calories appear to be coming from foods that are not as nutritionally dense as the World’s Healthiest Foods. These other foods may include fast foods, pre-packaged foods, processed foods, fried foods and sweets.
Of course, this is not news to me. I know I have pretty poor eating habits. Still, it’s annoying to see it in print like that.
I’m a bit overweight, but more disconcerting is my lack of energy. The lethargy. The small aches and pains that are starting to become the norm. The thing I like to do more than anything these days? Sit on the couch with my laptop, a margarita and some french fries. Or cookies. Or cheese dip.
And it sucks. So why? I know what to eat. I know I need to exercise. Hell, I love to exercise. And yet, I don’t do it enough. I make poor choices.
Again, I ask myself why? Do I like getting winded carrying the laundry basket up two flights of stairs? Do I like feeling cranky and tired all day? Do I like the look of my dull, sallow skin? Do I want to develop the health problems others in my family have? Do I want to shorten my life span?
The only answer I can come up with is instant gratification. I enjoy blogging more than exercising. I enjoy pizza more than asparagus. And I’m an all or nothing kinda girl. I’ve never been good at balance or delayed gratification. But, damn, I’ve got to find a way to take my health more seriously. Somehow, I’ve got to find a way.

I got 29%…. Not any better! LOL Maybe this explains the extra 30 pounds I’ve put on! And here I thought I could blame it on the “baby”!

I would suggest you link the junk food to healthy food. For example, for every french fry you eat, require yourself to eat a carrot stick. That will give you some extra nutrition, and maybe slow you down on eating the junk.

OMG, this post totally hit home. What can be better than blogging while sipping on a marg? Nothing. Absolutely NOTHING. It’s like being in freakin’ heaven!
Hey, I got the same percentage (19%)! And here I thought I was a pretty healthy eater (well, except for the chocolate & caffeine—can never have too much of either huh?). If only I knew what to do with quinoa.
I must have lied because I came up with 68% good food. And I am overweight. Maybe I just eat too many of those good foods. Interesting quiz. You’re not the only one who knows what to do, just doesn’t do it. Off to find a bottle of wine to have with dinner!
Not that I wish you lethargy and pain, but it makes me feel a little better to hear that you’r going through this too. My motivation has left the building. Give me some take out chinese and a beer, and some good blogs to read!
Just found you
LOVE YOU
woman you crack me the hell up AND teach me stuff.
whats not to love?
thanks for the info and smiles,
Carla
I’m an instant gratification girl myself. That saying, “Never put off until tomorrow what you can do today?” It was absolutely written about salty, buttered popcorn.
I could have written what you just wrote. I can completely relate and am in the same boat. I guess the right motivation to get me back into gear just hasn’t come along.
Nice to “meet” you btw, just found your blog.
[new visitor,too]
don’t even get me started on the aches and pains! (can somebody say ‘knee click’??) i totally feel bill cosby when he spoke about the changing body at 49–except i’m 34. hmmm…
Hi, found you through the Blogher Ad network. I can absolutely understand what you’re saying in this post. I started Weight Watchers last Saturday and I’ve already lost five pounds. I have to guzzle a lot of water and I go to bed hungry every night, but the weight is slowly coming off, finally. You can pay for the Online program if you don’t want to do the meetings. And no, they don’t pay me to say that! I just finally reached a point where I couldn’t stand being unhealthy anymore. You can do it!
