The All-Nighter

When was the last time you pulled an all-nighter? By choice, that is - not because your child kept you awake.

I can’t sleep tonight and that’s rare for me. I’m one of those people that can fall asleep just about anytime, anywhere - including behind the wheel of a car. But tonight I’m kinda jazzed. I had a relaxing day. Our friends came over for lunch and swimming, and while the kids played, the adults had a conversation! About adult stuff! Later in the evening I cleaned and organized a large closet in our “hobby room” (aka where I scrapbook and PHAT Daddy plays guitar and the kids do crafts and make messes). I LOVE purging and cleaning. It’s so satisfying to look into the closet and see our craft supplies, paper and books neatly stacked and bundled alphabetically. Kidding! But something close to that. I’ve got some OCD tendencies that way.

I had a big lunch and subsequently was not hungry for, nor motivated to cook, dinner. So I snacked on some chocolate-covered raisins. Now it’s 12:55 and I’m chowing down a piece of cold pizza. This just might be contributing to the fact that I am now heavier than I’ve ever been in my life, except when I was pregnant. Ya think?

It’s not likely I’ll stay up all night long. The obligation to care for two little people will squelch my desire to kick it old school and party all night with my blogger peeps and my cold pizza and my raisinettes. And tomorrow I have a dentist appointment to be fitted for one of those mouth guards. Apparently I grind my teeth in my sleep and two of them are cracked. Stress much?

I do this almost once a month, and it is my salvation! I will read, putter around, do lesson plans, write emails, and any darn thing I want… which is the key as to why I love it so much. I savored the quiet freedom it gave me, as a stay-at-home mom. There is always some sort of noise, or some perceived crisis that kept me from focusing on anything I really wanted.

YOu must try to make it a regular thing. Especially if you do it on a Friday night, because then you take a nap late in the afternoon Saturday, and DH could keep an eye on the kids. Now, mine are old enough to self entertain, so I can do it whenever I want.

    It is very rewarding!

Angela, that’s a great idea. I’m always telling myself I’ll be sorry (tired and cranky) if I stay up all night, but planning for it so I could nap the next day would be awesome. (I LOVE napping.)

an all nighter? hmmm yeah it has been that long. I am with you on the teeth grinding deal. No broken ones, but a wee bit of clenching. Wonder why we stress?

I have no idea why I’m still up either. It’s now midnight and I have to get up at 5:30 am to get ready and take my daughter to school. Yikes!

These days I can’t ever get to sleep til 1, because I just have too much to do. It’s starting to take a toll. Maybe what I need is some pizza and chocolate to get me through - good idea!

My dentist told me I grind my teeth at night, too. No wonder some days I would wake up unable to even lift my head off the pillow! It sucks. I went the cheap route and got one of those $15 mouthguards at Target. It blows. I had to sleep with my mouth open because its so freakin big…then it falls out the minute I fall asleep. When I blindly look for it in the middle of the night, it usually has my husband’s taco meat on it. Ew. Funny how stress manifests itself.

I do the all-nighter thing more often than I dare to admit. I do my best writing after the little people go to bed. And when the writing docket gets full, it’s hard to fit everything in within the course of a regular business day or evening at home.

So I fire up the kettle, steep myself some tea and settle in for a long night in front of the laptop.

Thankfully I’ve got lots of great tunes to keep me company.
