Smoking = Child Abuse?

Spunky blogged today about California’s proposed law that would make smoking in a car illegal when a child passenger is secured in a safety seat.
Someday the government will outlaw smoking entirely. Then they’ll get to work outlawing fast food, video games, and fettucine alfredo, which are all clearly hazardous to your health and should be considered child abuse.
PHAT = Parenting, Homeschooling And Technology. That about sums up my life at the moment.

Ok I sort of see the point (although junk food SHOULD be outlawed as it’s a loaded with carcinogens, preservatives, etc). Nevertheless, comparing video games and fettucine alfredo to the dangers of second hand smoke is ridiculous. Second hand smoke is equally if not more dangerous than smoking itself. Why would you do that to your CHILD?

Jenn, I *wouldn’t* do that to MY child. But I don’t think the government has the right to tell anyone how to raise their child. I agree that smoking is no good, but it’s not illegal. As I’ve stated many times in my posts - laws like these lead to more and more “regulation” and it will get to the point where parents have little control over raising their own children. See the previous entry about government “monitoring” in the UK. They propose to ensure that kids are fed 5 servings a fruits and veggies a day, for christ’s sake. It’s a dangerous, slippery slope to let the government get away with regulating what a person does in the privacy of their home - or car.
