High School Musical: How Old Am I?
I’ve decided to come clean with my latest guilty pleasure. Thanks to the Disney Channel movie High School Musical, I can’t stop singing “getcha-getcha-getcha-getcha head in the game,” and I have a crush on an 18 year old boy. If Zac Efron was around when I was 12, surely my Shaun Cassidy posters would have been coming down to make room for him.
High School Musical is a reborn version of Grease. Boy meets girl on vacation. Girl gets transferred to boy’s school. Boy and girl have certain images to uphold, which interfere with their relationship. In the end, boy gets girl and the whole school erupts into energetic song and dance.
At 7 1/2 years old, my son is just starting to branch out from Nickelodeon and Boomerang to the Disney Channel’s “tween-targeted” lineup including Kim Possible and The Suite Life of Zack & Cody. Enter the incessant advertisements for High School Musical. I’ve always been a fan of cheesy pop music and choreographed dance productions, so this movie instantly appealed to me. My son had little interest as first, but ultimately he couldn’t resist the basketball scenes and I think he’s got a thing for that Ashley Tisdale. A couple weeks after we first saw the movie, I Tivo’d the “dance-along” version and L & I had a blast trying to learn the moves.
Now I’ve purchased the soundtrack so we can enjoy belting out the songs in the car ad nauseum. And to think I was once worried that I wouldn’t be hip enough to keep up with my kids. Bring it on!

PHAT = Parenting, Homeschooling And Technology. That about sums up my life at the moment.

I believe there is a rule that says you have to provide a link to an MP3 anytime you write about music, especially cheesy teeny bopper pop.

Doh! There is music on the Disney site. This plus American Idol in one night. I must go listen Iron Maiden now so I can achieve karmic balance.

I’m with you there! At 11, Reagan is into these shows, as well as “That’s SO Raven” and “Even Stevens.”. We will have “Girl’s NIght” slumber parties, dancing and singing and eating popcorn. There are so many cute ones out there. She told me to recommend “The Cheetah Girls.”

Nick LOVES this! We have it on DVR, even though its on every other day anyway. I think he has a crush on the lead girl, though he won’t admit it. Another of his favorite shows is The Suite Life of Zack & Cody. Luke should check it out.

This movie is the rage among the high schoolers in our town — it’s got cult-like status. We have the movie on laptop & Tivo and Amanda has the soundtrack on cd and on her IPod. She’s available to teach the dance routines too!

aaaaaiiiigggghhhh! Disney! Run for the hills!
We are more of a Cartoon Network family, and I have to highly reccomend my current favorite, The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy. You have to love a cartoon in which two horrible kids make a deal with death and beat him in a limbo contest so that he has to be their friend forever.

We love this show and my kids are older. We are still singing the songs. “We’re all in this together…” LOL!

Hi there! I just found you via Jules and I *had* to comment on this post. My 9 and 6 yr old daughters LOVE LOVE LOVE this movie. I, on the other hand, want to pop my eardrums if I hear “Get Your Head In The Game” just one. more. time. They each have the cd and play it constantly. I will agree with you that Zac Efron is today’s version of Shawn Cassidy. I feel quite Mrs. Robinson-ish whenever I think that. LOL.

My kids are crazy about this movie - it is all the craze at their elementary school variety show. Last year it was wicked - this year High School Musical!
Lots of luck and keep up the good work!
