Diagnosis: Old Age

Well, doesn’t it just figure. You post a picture of yourself looking like death warmed over (see yesterday’s post) and then you get picked as the site of the day.

I’m still not feeling that great, and I’ve been contemplating this whole aging process.

I remember when I was a teenager and would notice my Mom rubbing cream on those patches of skin on her ankles and knees. You know, the skin that looks like an elephant hide. I would get really grossed out. At 18, you just know your nubile body is going to stand the test of time better than your Mom’s. Shuh.

Now, some 20 years and two children later, I have my very own elephant hide. I also have my very own flabby arms, stretch-marked pot belly and cellulite-covered ass.

I also wondered why my grandmother needed a day-of-the-week box to keep track of all the pills she had to take. Now, I swallow 9 pills a day. Six are vitamins. Two are a supplement to “stabilize my mood,” which I’m sure could be easily stabilized if I were to have a normal sleep schedule, a bit more free time, and two children that did not talk incessantly all day long. The last pill is for hypothyroidism. And by the way, that pill is supposed to increase my metabolism and help me lose weight. Um, that’s not working for me.

So for those of you who visit from Michele’s today, let me introduce myself: I’m a sleep-deprived mother who is starting to feel the ravages of time on her previously-pretty-hot-and-fit body. I’m trying to return my body to the age of 28, but I’m not sure I’ll ever get rid of the elephant hide on my knees. I enjoy reading, writing about, and discussing individual liberty, which I believe is slowly disappearing in this country. I love coffee, scrapbooking (although I’m currently in a slump), and homeschooling my children. And I have a lot to say about it all, so I hope you’ll visit me again!

Oh honey, I hear ya! Time marches on, usually all over our bodies. Me? I want a do-over.

Aging is from the debil. I never in a million years thought my 28 inch waist would explode to its current Jabba the Hut-like status. Woe is me.

Great blog! And Michele sent me.

Nice to meet you, Shannon! I can totally relate to the aging body. I hear elephant hide is all the rage with the hip peeps. At least it seems like a good rumour to start… And stretch marks? & the c-section scar (for me, at least)? my hubby calls them my badge of courage.

Happy Day! Michele sent me over today…

Congrats on being Site of the Day! For me, spring is always the time of the year when I feel my oldest. Everything seems light and fresh, but my aging body isn’t on par with all that. ;)

I’m here from Michele’s today, but will definitely be back!

I wonder if elephants, when they get older, start complaining about getting human skin on their knees? Hmm.
Great site. All the best to you.
    Oh, and Michele sent me.

You’re so funny! I can definitely relate. A couple of years ago, I tried Weight Watchers and did pretty well. The point system worked for me. It was pretty simple…when I ran out of points I just went to bed. I knew when I woke up I’d have some more!

    Hiya Cousin,
I am also hypothyroid. One thing you can do to take some control is to change your diet: eliminate the simple carbs (sugar, white rice, white bread, etc.) as they are detrimental to us. Start eating complex carbs (vegetables, brown rice, whole wheat). Check out this book - The Thyroid Diet by Mary Shomon and this website - http://thyroid.about.com/
(the going joke about me is my lack of memory, due to being hypo and that I need to take a pill. But you have to remember to take it and thus, the infamous pill container!) :o)
    Love ya,
    Laurie

Adulthood-not all it’s cracked up to be is it?

  23. Shannon | Apr 1, 2006 | Reply

Laurie, did you say “eliminate” simple carbs? Not “reduce,” but eliminate? Easier said than done. Perhaps you are not familiar with my very intimate relationship with sugar. ;-) Thanks for the link!
