Filed Under: My Daughter, My Son, Parenting
Today was a beautiful day - sunny and warm and spring-like. But I am sick. I don’t know exactly what it is, but I’m aching all over and feeling a little nauseous. C watched “We are the Laurie Berkner Band” on DVD (which is terrific, BTW), L played chess on his computer, and they built a parking garage with duplo blocks together (well, sort of). This is how I spent most of the day (photo taken by my son):

Around dinner time, PHAT Daddy took L outside to play catch and I dragged my butt off the floor to warm up a piece of pizza for C. As I cut up the pizza, C sat by the glass door, pressing her face against it and yelling, “Daddy! Wo-wo!” (which is what she calls L). We both needed some fresh air, so I brought her highchair out to the deck to watch. It will be SO nice when she’s finally walking and she can go out and run around with the rest of us. (No, she’s not walking yet, but she’s making steady progress with the therapy and just starting to cruise the furniture.)

After the boys were done playing, C wanted to get in on the action. So she, too, played catch with Daddy:

And that was our day. I’m off to sleep, but first, a few links to pass on:
Scrapbook Your Own Website: This looks cool, although a bit expensive at $5.95/month. I think I’ll stick to my “real” scrapbooks.
This next note warrants a post unto itself, but I’m just not feeling up to it tonight. One of my favorite blogs to visit is Michele’s. Reading her blog is like hanging out at the water cooler or having coffee with some new friends. She always has fun questions and I enjoy reading the variety of responses. Today Michele wanted to know if a parenting license should be required. To my shock, nearly every commenter thought this was just a fine idea, albeit impractical and difficult to enforce. Is no one in this country concerned about the government slowly but surely taking over every single freedom we have?

PHAT = Parenting, Homeschooling And Technology. That about sums up my life at the moment.

Sorry you’ve got the crud…must be all the partying for your birthday that got to you. A nice cozy chair, a warm blanket, and some tea should do the trick. If that doesn’t work, try a bottle of Jack and some pink pills…Just kidding, of course! Hope you feel better soon!

Oh, man! You probably caught the bug we had here. Sorry!! And you wanted your kids to get the immune-boost. Looks like you got it instead.
Hope you feel better soon.

Bet you didn’t know that when you brought up Michele here you’d be SITE OF THE DAY! Very exciting. I’m so sorry you’re feeling sick. Me too. Just started a cold today and I’m supposed to be laying in bed with my friend NyQuil. But instead I’m blogging.

Hello, Michele sent me.
I hope you feel better. Drink lots of fluids (that’s what my mom always says.)
This is my first visit to your blog. I love how the illustrated “you” looks so much like your photograph. Very cool!
Oh, and I love Victor Vito, and will now have that song in my head all night.

I hope u get well soon.
I homeschool as well - I’ve visited before & enjoy your blog. Tonight I’m here via Michelle. Congrats on being site of the day.
And I’m with you on the whole license thing - I didn’t comment yesterday (just getting back in action after having twins) - but a parenting license is NOT fine with me.

Awww I hope you feel better. I’m here through Michele’s so hello, Michele sent me!
I read that question on Michele’s blog too. It’s surprising how some feel the need for a parenting license. Parenting is instinctive and while not all parents are great, it shouldn’t be a legal thing. Ah well, my thoughts are cluttered but I’m with you on your stand here.

Michel;e sent me. Congratulations on being the site of the day. I am sorry you aren’t feeling well. I just got over the flu (2 weeks worth) so I hope you don’t have what I had.
I agreed that it would be nice to have a license to parent. That is one area where the government perhaps ought to exert some influence, seeing as how very few of us get it right. The license is not the objective; the classes teaching how to be a good parent are what is important. Very few of us get any training in parenting and it is imperative that we understand what is involved before we get into it.

Hello. Michele sent me!
I’m generally in the get your laws off my body! camp. But there are times when I really do feel that there ought to be at least some sort of basic competency exam for parenting. It’s tough, as a hopefully soon to be adoptive parent, to see that we have to go through such intense scrutiny in order to have in our lives what is granted by virtue of a quick roll in the hay to such examples of maternal wisdom as Britney Spears (hello, carseat!).
At least I hope for her sake it was a quick roll in the hay. Kevin Federline is icky.

Hello, Michele sent me. Hope you’re feeling better, and congrats on being Site of the Day. As to parenting licenses. The idea is intriguing, the execution would doom us all.

I didn’t agree with the licensing, either. I do have definite views on how certain situations should be handled (due to being a foster parent) but agree with the government becoming ‘big brother.’ Michele sent me!

Congratulations on being site of the day at Michele. Isn’t this fun? I know a few Home Schooleing Mom’s and I think it’s fabulous! All the kids seem to be way ahead of their contemporaries in Public School..and that makes sense to me…when I was a child we would spend the winteres in Florida and we went to this school that was very tiny; only 3 or at the most 4 kids in a class, and we only went mornings till noon and when we would return to our regular public school in the spring we were all always waaaaay ahead of our respective classes. All that indivdual attention really paid off!

I feel for you - I have had that “not quite right” feeling lately too…you’ll get over it, slowly but surely.
Sounds like getting a bit of fresh air did help you a bit, though!
As for parenting licences…I don’t think they should be required…but I do think that parent education should be STRONGLY advocated. We parent as we were parented…some just know what they were taught. If we can TEACH people to be better parents (and if they are willing to LEARN), that would make it better, I think. Not a requirement, only a suggestion.

What does licensing mean? A series of parenting courses meant to guide you through the difficult stages of parenting? A test to be passed before you can can give birth or adopt? I do find it sort of interesting that there are a lot of regulations, interviews etc before you can adopt but few for physically giving birth yourself.
Licensing would never fly — what would happen if you “failed” the course? Would the government force a woman to have her tubes tied so she can’t reproduce? A man to have a vascetomy? Monitor your sexual activity and fine you if you broke the law by having a baby anyway? Wear a scarlet letter so people would know? Tax penalties of you go ahead anyway?
Take away your kids? The LAST thing our government wants is MORE children to look out for.
At what age would these licensing courses be offered — and where? Let’s say the government says all child bearing women must take this course at age 18 (insert whatever age you find appropriate). They’d also have to include prospective fathers in the group. It’d have to be a pretty big location to handle all of them at any given time!
While it might be a thought-provoking concept, it’s pretty much impossible to implement I think

Top o the mornin to you. I do hope you’re feeling better.
Oh,I am very concerned about the government taking control of anything, they do know how to make life complicated. In many ways they already control parenting. Enough said.
I enjoyed reading and will return but today I’m here via Michele’s.

I don’t think it’s so much that people aren’t concerned about the government taking over our freedom as much as it is frustration at the parents who aren’t disciplining their children, who aren’t teaching their children right from wrong, who think it’s ok for their children to behave any way they want while out in public.

I tend to agree with my mom on this one… she says (tongue halfway in cheek) that there should just be birth control in the water and you should have to apply for an antidote.
But I don’t think Big Guv should have the power to decide who gets to breed… maybe your neighbors, co-workers and family members should get to vote on it…

Not much on my mind right now, but it’s not important. I’ve just been letting everything happen without me. I just don’t have anything to say right now.
