Want vs. Should?

I’ve heard this little saying/play on words: “Don’t should all over yourself.”

Do you should all over yourself? Here’s an example. Let’s say there is some family gathering going on. Nothing big like a birthday or holiday, but perhaps your parents/inlaws/sibling & family are doing something and you are invited to come along. Your husband is going. You really *should* go - so you don’t appear to be shunning the family or because the others want to see you and the kids - but you really don’t *want* to go. It will be cold. It’s not at a good time and the kids will be tired/cranky. Or maybe you were just really looking forward to hanging out at home and having some quiet time. What do you do?

Most of the time, I guilt myself into going. Because when I really think about, I’m just being selfish. Family is important. And I hope when my children are grown, they should all over themselves when it’s time to visit me.

Amen, sister! It is so easy to get caught up in the “shoulds!”
