Pop Culture 101
Tonight, I edged my way a little bit closer to pop culture. I watched Rock Star INXS for the first time. And I voted! (For Marty, in case you care. That “Trees” song pretty much kicked.)
I never, ever, ever want to be the type of mother who is totally out of touch with what my kids are “into.” It’s been easy so far, since my son is only just nearing 7 years old. But I’m concerned about the future. I’ve turned into quite the geek, spending my free time with scrapbooking magazines and Star Wars fan sites.
My own mom was pretty hip, but there were many times when my little teenage mind exploded with angst as she continued to misunderstand me. I know my children will feel that same pain. It’s part of growing up. I’m hoping to make it just a wee bit easier on them by attempting to stay in touch with popular reality.
Now can someone please tell me who Nickelback is? Isn’t that a position on a football team?

PHAT = Parenting, Homeschooling And Technology. That about sums up my life at the moment.

Being in the know is great but be careful not to try to be your child’s “friend”. You can’t be and that’s not what they really want or need. And, no matter how cool you think you are,in your teenager’s mind, you won’t be. That’s just how it is!

Hey! I have an almost 11 and 14 yr old, and want you to know that we are their BEST friends! My Dh has really kept up with the music scene (Nickelback rocks…check out a CD), and I find that spending an afternoon w/ them at Borders, in the music section, helps . Plus, we have shared our love of classic rock with them, which is considered very “cool”. Not many kids these days can sing all the lyrics to “Bohemian Rhapsody!”. SPeaking of Rock Star INXS…my kids knew every song last week, except for the one by Elvis!

I’m just impressed that you know what a Nickelback is in football!

Ok, I am not anonymous….yes, it’s me…Shannon’s “PRETTY HIP MOM”. YIKES, was I only “PRETTY HIP”, I thought I was “WAY COOL”. Anyway Shannon, understanding your children is not easy and if it were, all those HOW TO BOOKS, would never have been written. Despite all your best efforts, your children will feel misunderstood to a certain degree, it’s the nature of the little creatures!! Just stay the course with love and tolerance and they will grow up fine. Ohh and one more thing, I “LOVE” Rock Star INXS, and I voted for Marty also. Hey, does that finally make me a HIP MOM!!
